Rovinj is city that has a long history. Originally The Illyrians settled here, a small civilization that populated all of Croatia. Since then, many have come across these lands in Croatia. The Austrians, Italians, and Yugoslavians. The Illyrians were the first known people to settle here and stayed for centuries. Later it was the Romans, and later the Byzantines who came through these lands in Croatia. Inside the first era, that of the Illyrians, the Histri Tribe also passed through here. Not in vain, the Romans saw this and desired it for themselves.
After the Romans came and conquered the land, the Goths and Lombards came and annexed the lands and its territories. It was a time of fair game, and they were lands populated by Latins, the Republic of Venice, settled here since the 8th century until the end of the 18th century. Perhaps one of the most important moments in the history of Istria and Rovvinj, with the city under Yugoslavian or Venecian rule. The city during this time was fortified.
After the Venicians, came the Austrians, who then took over these lands right before the invasion of Napoleon. With Napoleon, the region was under French rule, a short rule only from 1805 to 1809. Then they spoke Venecian, Italian, but were languages that were slowly lost when Istria became part of Austria.
In the 20th century, WWI came, then WWII, and the unification under command of Tito happened. Then came the Balkan War and the independence finally happened at the end of the 20th century for Croatia.
During WWI, Istria formed part of Italy, a situation that was prolonged past WWI, when the Italian government was overthrown from it, then became part of Tito Yugoslavia. During this time, Yugoslavia grouped together under the same flag, Croatians, Serbs, Bosnians, Kosovans, Montenegroans, and Slavs.
The main cities of Pula were vacated, many Italians fled and exiled themselves on the other side of Trieste.
In 1991, Yugoslavia broke apart, and this is when Croatia returned to recuperate some of its identity, though had to go through a war to get to it, a war whose destruction is being mended day by day in the region, so that it can get back to being a tourist attraction.
Today, Rovinj is a historical city but at the same time touristy. Its cultural patrimony, beaches, and natural scenery has made way for new hotels, apartments for rent, and houses and chalets where its tourists can find accommodation in Rovinj. Today, it is one of the most touristy cities on the Istria Peninsula. |
